Martinsburg, West Virginia (WV), the seat of Berkeley County, was chartered in 1778 and named in honor of Thomas Bryan Martin, a nephew of Lord Thomas Fairfax, owner of vast tracts of forest south of the Potomac River during the Colonial period. On highway US-11 and the I-81 expressway, Martinsburg is a principal hotel lodging hub for travelers and sightseers visiting historic landmarks. The Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport is located south of the city. Fort Neally was established on Opequon Creek near Martinsburg as early as 1755. The city is among the largest in West Virginia.
