Tyler County, in northwestern West Virginia (WV), was established in 1814 and named in honor of John Tyler, the eighth governor of Virginia and the father of President John Tyler. The Tyler County seat is at Middlebourne on Middle Island Creek. The Ohio River courses across part of the northwestern boundary of the county. Tyler is almost entirely rural and largely agricultural, though in the late 1800s the northern reaches of the county boomed after the oilfields south of Sistersville were struck. The largest community in the county, Sistersville is renowned for its elaborate buildings. As of the 2010 census, the population of Tyler County was 9,208.
