Oak Mounds

The largest of the two Oak Mounds

The two Oak Mounds rise along an upland along the West Fork River at Clarksburg, West Virginia, in Harrison County. The mounds have never been excavated but were probably raised by the Hopewellian culture between 1 and 1000 A.D. The larger mound, now located in front of the Oakmound Evangelical Church, is about 12 feet high and 60 feet in diameter. A smaller mound rises to the west.

A number of burials of important persons of the culture likely occurred in these mounds.
