Roane County, in central West Virginia (WV), was created in 1856 from parts of Jackson, Gilmer, and Kanawha counties and was named in honor of Judge Spencer Roane, a judge and the son-in-law of Patrick Henry. Its county seat is at Spencer. A largely rural county, its economy is principally agricultural, and livestock, fruit, tobacco, and timber are its primary exports. Several vinyards and wineries operate in the northern county. The southern reaches of Roane County are drained by the Pocatalico River; the northern, by Spring Creek, Reedy Creek, and other tributaries of the Little Kanawha River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 14,926.
