National Historic Landmark -- Fairmont, West Virginia -- Marion County
Prickett's Fort was built in 1773 by Captain Jacob Prickett to protect residents of the first pioneer settlement in upper Monongahela Valley from increasing Indian raids. At the time it was built, more than 1,000 people had come to live at Prickett's Settlement. The fort was built on land owned by Prickett, whose family continued living nearby into the 1970s. Though never besieged, the fort frequently provided emergency shelter and supplies when an attack seemed eminent. The fort was reconstructed in 1976 as a living history landmark at Pricketts Fort State Park.
