Canaan Valley park gearing up for brilliant Allegheny autumn

Officials at Canaan Valley are expecting a vivid Allegheny autumn.

One of the most lofty resort-parks in the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia, Canaan Valley State Park is gearing up for a vivid autumn, and its staff is emphasizing its location as an ideal base for exploration.

Within an hour's drive of some of the region's most popular outdoor attractions, including Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls, the resort-park attracts visitors who have much to see, though many are lulled by its atmosphere, says general manager Steve Drumheller.

"While the resort makes for a great home-base for exploring the valley and beyond, many people arrive and discover that their to-do list is a lot shorter after some time relaxing," Drumheller said.

The valley is renowned for its brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges. More than 50 species of deciduous trees, such as oaks, ashes, maples, and hickories, create a colorful palette of foliage that typically peaks in late September

The leaf-change compliments the park's many outdoor activities, such as golfing, hiking, and geocaching, and scenic chairlift rides to the top of Cabin Mountain are perenially popular. Nearby activities include canoeing, zip-lining, horseback riding, and whitewater rafting.

Autumn events at the park this year include a Sept. 22-24, the Sept. 23, and the Oct. 7.

Available through Oct. 22, 2017, the park's Mountain Escape Getaways package features two nights of lodging in a standard double-queen room, two breakfasts per person, a hiking trail guide, a scenic chairlift ride, one round of mini-golf and access to the resort’s Beech Club, which features an indoor pool, a fitness center, a whirlpool and sauna. Mountain Escape Getaways rates start at $138 per person based upon double occupancy.

Canaan Valley Resort is a drive of approximately three hours from Pittsburgh, 2.5 hours from Washington, D.C., and 2.75 hours from Charleston.
