Paw Paw, West Virginia

Paw Paw, West Virginia (WV), a community on the Potomac River in Morgan County, was settled in 1800, but was not incorporated until 1891. It became the trading center for the Little Cacapon River region following the arrival of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.

Northwest of town, the Paw-Paw Tunnel on the B&O is a frequented historical site. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park follows the Potomac River opposite the town.

Paw-Paw Tree

The name Paw Paw is derived from the paw-paw tree (Asimina triloba), a native fruit tree found in abundance in the region.

Paw Paw is located on highway WV-9 at MD-51 approximately 11 miles north of Forks of Cacapon, West Virginia, 18 miles southwest of Great Cacapon, West Virginia, and 21 miles south of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
