Rock Climbing Terminology

Walk into a climbing gym or visit a West Virginia crag and you may hear climbers talking about beta, cruxes, cams, whippers, dynos, and sending a route. Rock climbing has developed its own vocabulary, describing everything from equipment and techniques to particular kinds of holds, movements, and falls.

This guide explains common rock climbing terms in plain English for beginning climbers and anyone trying to better understand the sport.

West Virginia climbers will encounter many of these terms at climbing areas throughout the state, particularly in the New River Gorge region, one of the best-known rock-climbing destinations in the eastern United States.

Safety note: A glossary is no substitute for qualified instruction. Climbing, rappelling, belaying, and anchor construction require skills you should learn and practice under appropriate supervision.

Basic rock climbing terms every beginner should know

Anchor: A secure point or system of attachment that connects a climbing rope or another part of a safety system to the rock, structure, or mountain.

Belay: A system used to manage a climbing rope so a climber’s fall can be arrested. The person managing the rope is the belayer.

Beta: Information about a climb. Beta may include hold locations, a sequence of movements, information about protection, or advice on how to complete a difficult section.

Crag: A rock-climbing area, typically containing multiple routes or climbing sectors.

Crux: The most difficult move or sequence of moves on a climb.

Pitch: A section of a roped climb between belay points. A single-pitch route can generally be completed with one rope length, while a multi-pitch route requires intermediate belays.

Protection: Equipment or fixed hardware used as part of a climbing safety system, particularly to limit the distance and consequences of a leader’s fall.

Route: An established or recognized line followed up a rock face or other climbing surface.

Send: To successfully complete a climb without falling or weighting the rope for assistance. Climbers commonly say they have “sent” a route or boulder problem.

Top-rope: A climbing system in which the rope runs from the climber through an anchor above and back to the belayer. Because the belayer takes in rope as the climber ascends, potential falls are generally much shorter than in lead climbing.

Types of climbing

Aid climbing: Climbing in which equipment placed or fixed to the rock is used to make upward progress. This differs from free climbing, in which equipment protects the climber but is not used to ascend.

Alpine climbing: Climbing in a mountain environment that may combine rock, snow, or ice climbing with route-finding, weather assessment, and other mountaineering skills.

Bouldering: Climbing relatively short rock formations or artificial walls without ropes. Climbers typically use crash pads and spotters to help manage falls. Despite its comparatively low height, bouldering can involve difficult, powerful movements.

Free climbing: Climbing in which upward progress is made using the climber’s hands, feet, and natural rock features. Ropes and protection may be used to protect against falls but are not used to pull the climber upward.

Free soloing: Free climbing without a rope or other system to protect the climber from a fall. A fall can have catastrophic or fatal consequences.

Lead climbing: Climbing in which the climber ascends with the rope trailing below and clips it to protection along the route. Unlike top-roping, a lead climber may fall below the point from which the fall begins before the rope arrests the fall.

Mountaineering: The broader practice of climbing or traveling through mountain environments. Depending on the objective, it may involve hiking, scrambling, rock climbing, snow and ice travel, navigation, and other technical skills.

Multi-pitch climbing: Climbing a route in multiple sections, or pitches, with intermediate belay stations between them.

Soloing: Climbing alone. The term does not necessarily mean climbing without a rope; solo climbing can involve specialized rope systems. Free soloing specifically means climbing without fall protection.

Sport climbing: Lead climbing on routes where permanent bolts provide the primary protection. The climber clips the rope into the fixed protection while ascending.

Top-roping: Climbing with the rope running through an anchor above the climber to a belayer below. Top-roping generally limits fall distance but still requires properly constructed anchors, correct equipment, and competent belaying.

Traditional climbing, or trad climbing: Lead climbing in which the climber generally places removable protection, such as cams and nuts, while ascending and removes it afterward. Some routes may also incorporate existing fixed protection.

Climbing equipment and protection

Ascender: A mechanical device that grips a rope when loaded in one direction and slides along it in the other, allowing a climber to ascend a fixed rope.

Bolt: Fixed climbing hardware installed in drilled rock. A hanger attached to the bolt provides a point to clip climbing equipment.

Camming device, or cam: A spring-loaded piece of removable climbing protection placed in cracks. Cams are manufactured in different sizes to fit different crack widths.

Carabiner: A strong metal connector with a spring-loaded gate. Carabiners are used throughout climbing systems to connect ropes, protection, anchors, and other equipment. They may have locking or non-locking gates.

Chock: A general term for passive protection wedged into a constriction in the rock. The related term chockstone describes a naturally occurring rock wedged into a crack or opening.

Crash pad: A portable foam pad placed beneath boulder problems to help reduce the consequences of a fall onto the ground.

Dynamic rope: A climbing rope designed to stretch under load, helping absorb energy generated during a fall.

Fixed gear: Climbing protection or equipment left permanently or semi-permanently on a route, such as bolts or some pitons.

Fixed line: A rope secured in place for ascending, descending, or moving through terrain.

Gear: A broad term for climbing equipment. In traditional climbing, “gear” may refer specifically to removable protection such as cams and nuts.

Nuts: Pieces of passive metal protection placed in constrictions in cracks. Modern climbing nuts are generally attached to wire loops and manufactured in a range of sizes.

Piton: A metal spike or blade driven into a crack in the rock for protection or anchoring. Pitons played an important role in climbing history but are less commonly placed on many modern rock routes because repeated hammering can damage rock.

Static rope: A rope designed to stretch much less than a dynamic climbing rope. Static or low-stretch ropes are used for certain fixed-line, hauling, rescue, and rappelling applications rather than for absorbing lead falls.

Rock features and climbing holds

Arête: A sharp outside edge or corner of rock that can be climbed using holds and body positions on either side.

Chimney: A crack or opening large enough for a climber to fit much or all of the body inside. “Chimneying” refers to techniques that use opposing pressure against the sides.

Crimp: A small edge typically held with the fingertips. “Crimping” also describes how to position the fingers on small holds.

Dihedral: An inside corner formed where two rock faces meet.

Hueco: A hole or hollow in rock that can provide a handhold or foothold. The word comes from Spanish.

Jug: Climbing slang for a large, positive handhold that is comparatively easy to grip.

Pinch: A hold gripped by squeezing it between the fingers and the thumb.

Pocket: A hole in the rock used as a handhold. Pockets can range from large openings to holds that accommodate only one or two fingers.

Sidepull: A hold oriented so it is most effectively used by pulling sideways rather than primarily downward.

Sloper: A rounded hold without a pronounced positive edge. Using a sloper relies heavily on friction, body position, and the direction of force.

Climbing movements

Dyno: A dynamic climbing move in which the climber uses momentum—often by leaving some or all points of contact with the wall—to reach another hold.

Edging: Using the inside or outside edge of a climbing shoe to stand on a small foothold.

Gaston: A hand position in which the climber pushes or pulls outward with the elbow generally pointing away from the body, similar to forcing apart elevator doors.

Mantle: A movement that shifts from pulling to pressing downward, similar to pushing oneself out of a swimming pool. Mantling is commonly used when topping out a boulder or ledge.

Smearing: Using friction between the rubber sole of a climbing shoe and the rock rather than standing on a distinct foothold.

Stemming: Applying opposing pressure with the feet, and sometimes the hands, against two surfaces. It is frequently used in corners and dihedrals.

Traverse: To move primarily sideways across a rock face rather than directly upward or downward.

Ropes, belaying, and descending

Belayer: The person responsible for managing the climbing rope through a belay system. Effective belaying requires training, attention, and proper use of equipment.

Descent: The means or route used to return from a climb. Depending on the location, climbers may walk off, lower, rappel, or use another established descent.

Descender: A device that creates and controls friction on a rope during descent. Many climbing devices can serve multiple functions.

Lowering: Descending a climber by allowing rope to move in a controlled manner through a belay system and anchor.

Pendulum: A sideways swinging fall or movement on a rope. Pendulums can occur unintentionally or be used deliberately to reach another part of a route.

Rappel: A controlled descent along a rope using an appropriate friction device and system. Rappelling requires technical knowledge and is a significant source of climbing accidents when systems are incorrectly established or operated.

Stance: A position from which a climber or belayer can stand or maintain stability. A “belay stance” is the location from which a belay is managed.

Climbing performance and slang

Ascent: A successful climb or the act of climbing upward. Climbers also use the term to describe how or under what circumstances a route was completed.

Bomber: Climbing slang for something considered exceptionally solid or dependable, often referring to protection, an anchor, or a hold. The term should not be treated as a technical guarantee of safety.

Exposure: The sensation or objective condition of being high above open space, often with substantial air beneath or around the climber.

Flash: To complete a route or boulder problem on the first attempt despite having received prior information, or beta, about it.

Onsight: To complete a route on the first attempt without prior practice or useful advance information about the climb.

Rest: A position or pause that allows a climber to recover while on a route. A no-hands rest allows the climber to remain in position without using the hands.

Send: To complete a climb successfully without falling or using the rope or protection to make upward progress.

Whipper: Climbing slang for a substantial lead fall.

Other useful climbing terms

Scrambling: Movement over steep or rocky terrain that requires the use of the hands but generally falls below the technical difficulty of roped rock climbing. The boundary between scrambling and climbing can vary with terrain and local usage.

Rock climbing: The sport or activity of ascending natural rock or artificial climbing surfaces using specialized techniques and movements. Rock climbing includes several disciplines, including bouldering, sport climbing, traditional climbing, and free soloing, so ropes are not used in every form.

Understanding climbing grades

In the United States, rock routes are commonly rated using the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS). Technical rock climbing falls within Class 5.

The scale progresses from easier technical climbing to increasingly difficult grades. Familiar ratings include 5.6, 5.8, 5.10, and 5.12. Beginning with 5.10, grades are commonly subdivided with letters—for example, 5.10a, 5.10b, 5.10c, and 5.10d.

Grades provide a useful indication of difficulty, but they are not guarantees. Perceived difficulty can vary by climbing style, body dimensions, weather, rock conditions, and the character of an individual route.

Bouldering uses different grading systems, most commonly the V-scale in the United States.

Rock climbing terminology in West Virginia

West Virginia has developed a particularly strong climbing culture because of its extensive cliffs and boulders, especially the sandstone formations of the New River Gorge region.

Climbers exploring West Virginia may encounter sport routes with bolt protection, traditional routes requiring removable protection, boulder problems, single-pitch crags, and multi-pitch climbs. Understanding the vocabulary makes guidebooks, route descriptions, and conversations with experienced climbers considerably easier to follow.

The terminology also reflects climbing’s long history. Equipment and techniques have changed substantially over the decades, while colorful expressions such as beta, send, whipper, jug, and bomber have become part of the language climbers share around the world.

Learning to climb safely

Knowing the vocabulary is only the beginning of climbing.

Belaying, lead climbing, rappelling, anchor construction, and placing traditional protection are technical skills that can have serious consequences if done incorrectly. Beginning climbers should seek qualified hands-on instruction rather than relying on written descriptions alone.
