Will West Virginia have brilliant fall foliage in 2026? The weather is offering some clues

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Weeks before autumn color spreads across West Virginia’s highest mountains, abundant summer rainfall is providing some of the ingredients that could help produce a brilliant fall foliage season.

But whether the state’s forests turn spectacular shades of red, orange, and gold will increasingly depend on what happens next.

Rainfall has varied considerably across West Virginia this summer, with repeated thunderstorms drenching some areas while largely missing others. The weather that follows in late August and September could prove especially important.

In Beckley, June 2026 was the wettest June on record, according to the National Weather Service. The Raleigh County Memorial Airport recorded 8.64 inches of precipitation during the month, 4.34 inches above normal. That surpassed the previous June record of 8.07 inches set in 2016. Weather records at Beckley date back to 1893.

Across the National Weather Service’s Charleston forecast area, June rainfall ranged from about 1 to 9 inches, with some locations finishing more than three inches below normal and others more than four inches above it.

That variation is important because West Virginia’s fall foliage season is not a single statewide event. Color typically begins at the highest elevations of the Allegheny Mountains before progressing into the New River Gorge, the Greenbrier Valley and, eventually, the lower Kanawha and Ohio valleys.

Why summer rainfall matters for fall foliage

For many forests, adequate summer moisture is a promising start because prolonged drought can stress trees, causing leaves to turn brown or fall prematurely. Adequate rainfall during the growing season generally promotes tree health and helps trees retain their leaves into autumn.

“A lot of people think about fall foliage only when the leaves begin changing, but the weather during the summer helps set the stage,” said David Sibray, publisher of West Virginia Explorer. “If the trees enter autumn healthy and aren’t suffering from severe drought, we’ve cleared one of the hurdles to having a really good foliage season.”

Summer rainfall alone, however, cannot determine how brilliant the foliage will be. Some of the most vivid fall color develops when favorable growing conditions give way to sunny days and cool nights as autumn approaches.

Those conditions are particularly important for the brilliant reds and purples produced by anthocyanin pigments in species such as maples. Sunlight and sugars play an important role in producing those pigments, which is why cloudy, rainy autumn weather can result in less intense reds. Heavy rain and wind can also knock leaves from trees and shorten the display, while an early hard freeze can damage leaves before they reach their full autumn color.

“We’ve had plenty of water in many parts of the state,” Sibray said. “What I’d like to see next is a gradual transition toward sunny days and cool nights as we get into September. If that happens, the weather could be setting us up for a beautiful autumn.”

Heavy August rain is easing drought

West Virginia has not experienced a uniformly wet year. Statewide precipitation from January through July totaled 25.24 inches, 2.57 inches below normal, according to the National Integrated Drought Information System. July itself produced 4.76 inches statewide, essentially normal for the month.

More recent rainfall, however, has begun to improve lingering drought conditions just as forests approach late summer. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, more than 2 inches of rain fell across most of West Virginia during the monitoring period ending Aug. 11, with localized amounts approaching 6 inches.

The rainfall improved drought conditions across the region, although areas of abnormal dryness and drought remained. The drought information system estimated in mid-August that approximately 209,500 West Virginia residents were living in drought-affected areas.

The numbers illustrate an important distinction for the coming foliage season: West Virginia began the year with an accumulated precipitation deficit, but repeated summer storms have delivered substantial moisture to many forests as autumn approaches.

A wet summer hasn’t meant the same thing everywhere

Much of West Virginia’s summer rainfall arrives as localized showers and thunderstorms that can soak one community while largely missing another. Beckley’s record-setting June illustrates one extreme, but National Weather Service observations show substantial differences across the state and surrounding region.

West Virginia’s mountainous terrain further complicates the picture. Because of the Appalachian Mountains, precipitation can vary substantially over relatively short distances, and local differences in elevation, slope and exposure influence both forest conditions and the timing of fall color.

That means the condition of West Virginia’s forests as they enter fall can vary from region to region, just as the timing and intensity of autumn color can vary from one mountain to another.

Fall color starts first in West Virginia’s highest mountains

Elevation is one of the most important factors in determining when autumn arrives in West Virginia.

The state’s first substantial color typically appears in the high Alleghenies, including areas around Dolly Sods, Canaan Valley, Spruce Knob, and the higher mountains of Pocahontas County. At 4,863 feet, Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia, and autumn conditions can develop there considerably earlier than in the state’s major river valleys.

Color then generally moves to lower elevations through October. The New River Gorge and central mountain country typically follow the high Alleghenies, while the Greenbrier Valley and the lower Kanawha and Ohio valleys can retain autumn color later in the season.

“That’s part of what makes fall in West Virginia so interesting,” Sibray said. “You can leave a valley where the trees are still mostly green, climb a couple thousand feet, and suddenly find yourself in autumn. Then a few weeks later you’re following the color back down into the valleys.”

These elevation differences can effectively stretch West Virginia’s foliage season across several weeks, allowing travelers to follow autumn from the high Alleghenies into progressively lower country.

September weather could determine how brilliant the colors become

For now, summer rainfall has given many West Virginia forests one of the ingredients for good fall color, and recent heavy rains have helped reduce drought stress in parts of the state. Some of the most consequential weather, however, is still ahead.

If ample soil moisture is followed by relatively sunny early-fall weather and increasingly cool nights, conditions could become more favorable for vivid autumn color. Conversely, persistent cloudy, rainy weather could diminish some of the brilliant reds, while strong storms near peak foliage could strip colorful leaves from the trees.

The latest drought figures are therefore encouraging, but they are not a forecast of spectacular foliage. Weather conditions over the next several weeks will determine much of what visitors ultimately see when the first colors emerge in the high Alleghenies.

“If September gives us the right weather, I think there’s reason to be optimistic,” Sibray said. “But we’re not going to know how good the show will be until we see what happens over the next several weeks.”

West Virginia Explorer will follow conditions as autumn approaches, including the first color changes in the high Alleghenies and the progression of foliage to lower elevations through October.
