Friendly, West Virginia

Friendly, West Virginia (WV), a community on the Ohio River in Tyler County, was incorporated in 1898 and named for Friend Cochrane Williamson, a grandson of one of the first settlers. Friendly is the setting of one of the best-known novels in Appalachian literature — “Shiloh,” by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, the story of a boy and a stray dog. The novel won the Newbery Medal in 1992. The town is located across the river from New Matamoras, Ohio.

To the northeast and southwest of the community, respectively, Mill Creek Island and Grandview Island are protected as part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Friendly is located on highway WV-2 approximately five miles southwest of Sistersville, West Virginia, and 10 miles north of Saint Marys, West Virginia.
