Wellsburg, West Virginia
Wellsburg, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of Brooke County, was chartered on the Ohio River in 1791 as “Charlestown” but was renamed Wellsburg in 1816 in honor of Alexander Wells, the son-in-law of Charles Prather, who built a large flour warehouse east of the town. Wellburg was the home of Patrick Gass, a member of the Lewis & Clark Expedition and its chronicler.
The Wellsburg Wharf, now on the National Register of Historic Places, became one of the most important regional centers of activity on the Ohio River in the 1830s and is now a focus for picnicking and recreational boating.
