Mountains rise around the City of Logan, W.Va.

Logan, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of Logan County, was platted in 1827, charted in 1852, and first named Aracoma in honor of the daughter of Cornstalk, a Shawnee chieftan. According to local tradition, Aracoma lived on an island in the Guyandotte River at present-day Logan. In 1907, the city name was changed from Aracoma to Logan in honor of the Mingo chieftan and orator. The city serves as an important commercial center in the otherwise rugged region.

Chief Logan State Park, where the outdoor drama “The Aracoma Story” is peformed in summer, is located four miles north of town. The Bearwallow ATV Trail System is located northeast of the city.

Location

Logan is located on WV-10 approximately three miles east of the US-119 expressway, 30 miles southwest of Madison, West Virginia, and 30 miles northeast of Williamson, West Virginia. West Logan, West Virginia, is located just north of town.
