The journey by sternwheeler across the to Blennerhassett Island is a journey into the past. Visitors are enveloped by a restored plantation setting, complete with orchards and the reconstructed Blennerhassett mansion.

Harmon Blennerhassett, an Irish aristocrat, settled the island in 1798 but fled after his plan to establish a new nation to the south were unveiled. The mansion burned in 1811, but its foundations were uncovered in 1973, and the mansion was rebuilt. Costumed volunteers provide detailed information as part of a guided tour, and visitors may also enjoy bike paths, picnic areas, and carriage rides. A ferry to the island departs from Point Park in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
