Mason, West Virginia (WV), extends along the east side of the Ohio River (at right). Pomeroy, Ohio, is at left.
Mason, WV (West Virginia), a community on the Ohio River in Mason County, was chartered in 1856 and named for Mason County, which was named for George W. Mason, author of the Constitution of Virginia. The community is sometimes also known as Mason City.
Mason is the northernmost community in the northward bend in the Ohio River in western West Virginia and is very nearly the midpoint in the Ohio River between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. The town was once an important center for brine salt production.
Mason is situated in a flat on a northward bend in the Ohio River formerly known as Waggoner’s Bottom. The town is opposite Pomeroy, Ohio.
The Mason County Aiport, the West Virginia State Farm Museum, and the McClintic Wildlife Management Area are located roughly seven miles southwest of the community.
