
Smithers, West Virginia (WV), a community in Fayette County, was incorporated in 1936 and named for James Smithers, a settler who resided at the mouth of what is now known as Smithers Creek, a tributary of the Kanawha River. The town is situated on the Kanawha River opposite Montgomery, West Virginia, and extends up Cannelton Hollow, long a productive locale for coal mining, toward the Mount Olive State Correctional Complex.
