
Kingwood, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of Preston County, was established in 1811, charted in 1853, and named for its location near a forest of singularly tall trees.
Kingwood is the site of the annual Preston County Buckwheat Festival. Camp Dawson, a West Virginia Army National Guard base, is located on the Cheat River two miles south of Kingwood. The town is located on a broad highland levels above the river.

Kingwood is located near the Cheat River on highways WV-7 and WV-26 approximately 10 miles west of Terra Alta, West Virginia, 15 miles south of I-68 at Bruceton Mills, West Virginia, and 25 miles southeast of Morgantown, West Virginia.
