Middlebourne, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of Tyler County, was chartered in 1813 and so-named for its location midway between the source and mouth of Middle Island Creek, a tributary of the Ohio River. “Bourne” is a Middle English term for a small stream or brook. It has also been said that the name is derived from the town’s location midway between Pennsylvania and salt wells in west-central West Virginia near Charleston.
