Thurmond, West Virginia (WV), a community on the New River in Fayette County, was incorporated in 1900 and named for Captain W.D. Thurmond, who owned the land upon which the town is located. Though few people live permanently in Thurmond, Amtrak maintains a flag-stop passenger station in restored Thurmond Depot. Much of the community is park owned and managed as part of the Thurmond National Historic District.

Thurmond was long a chief center for lodging and commerce in the New River Gorge. Preserved by the National Park Service, Thurmond today is among the most visited locations within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and among the best known “ghost towns” in the U.S.

Location

Thurmond is located on Thurmond Road (Fayette County Route 25) approximately five miles northeast of the Bechtel National Scout Reserve and seven miles northwest of the US-19 expressway at Glen Jean, West Virginia,  10 miles from Mount Hope, West Virginia, and 11 miles from Oak Hill, West Virginia.
